An annual highlight in the Opera Scholars calendar, the Lieder Award Final will see the next generation of opera stars sing for prize money and further education worth more than $4000, sponsored by The Henkell Brothers and the Goethe-Institute Australia.
Our four finalists will each sing a 20-25 minute recital program, accompanied on piano by the extraordinary Rhodri Clarke and Phillipa Safey.
The Lieder Award Final will be hosted by OSA's Program and Artistic Director, Alexander Lewis, and will be adjudicated by two industry superstars, Lee Abrahmsen and Michael Petruccelli.

New to the world of Opera?
Lieder is a German-language art song, typically written for solo voice and piano, where poetry and music hold equal importance. Originally designed for the home or private salon performances rather than large concert halls or opera houses, composers often grouped songs together in song cycles to tell an overarching story. Composers such as Brahms, Schubert, Schumann (Clara and Robert) and Mahler expanded the genre’s complexity and remain as some of the great musicians and composers of their time.
