MARTYN ARENDS
SUPPLEMENTARY
TENOR
Martyn Arends (He/Him) is a young tenor from Melbourne, Victoria, currently pursuing a Master of Music (Opera Performance) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music under the tuition of Dermot Tutty, following his Bachelor of Music (Performance) completed in 2024 under Stephen Grant.
Martyn’s performance career began in musical theatre, studying with Robert Latham from 2016 to 2020. He has participated in the Melbourne Gang Show from 2017 to 2025, where he undertook various solo and chorus roles.
His journey with classical voice began in 2021 under the tuition of Frederica Cunningham, and briefly studying with Christopher Tonkin prior to entering the Melbourne Conservatorium in 2022. During his training he performed in a number of ensembles, including the Early Voices Ensemble and the Chamber Choir. He has performed in a number of quartets, notably Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor, K. 626: VI. Recordare and Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, Op. 57: II. Quis est homo.
As a member of VOYCE (Victorian Opera Youth Chorus Ensemble) from 2022 to 2024, Martyn played the roles of the ‘First Sailor’ in the opera Dido and Aeneas (2023), ‘Lord Tolloller’ in an excerpt from the operetta Iolanthe (2024), and ‘Curly’ in an excerpt from the musical Oklahoma.
He looks forward to joining Opera Scholars Australia in 2025 and furthering his craft.
